Seattle’s vision of an urban food oasis is going forward. A seven-acre plot of land in the city’s Beacon Hill neighborhood will be planted with hundreds of different kinds of edibles: walnut and chestnut trees; blueberry and raspberry bushes; fruit trees, including apples and pears; exotics like pineapple, yuzu citrus, guava, persimmons, honeyberries, and lingonberries; herbs; and more. All will be available for public plucking to anyone who wanders into the city’s first food forest.

“This is totally innovative, and has never been done before in a public park,” Margarett Harrison, lead landscape architect for the Beacon Food Forest project, tells TakePart. Harrison is working on construction and permit drawings now and expects to break ground this summer.

The concept of a food forest certainly pushes the envelope on urban agriculture and is grounded in the concept of permaculture, which means it will be perennial and self-sustaining, like a forest is in the wild. Not only is this forest Seattle’s first large-scale permaculture project, but it’s also believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.

“Get in Shape, Girl!”

I have mixed feelings about this product. I mean, I get what it was trying to do and all (promote fitness, I THINK, around the time of the Jane Fonda craze). But putting an exclamation after a command like that just makes it seem like GIRL, GET IT TOGETHER! YOU ARE 8 YEARS OLD AND NEED TO START TALKING ABOUT WEIGHT AND FITNESS AND JUDGING YOURSELF!

Maybe some advertising person was just like WHAT KIND OF PRODUCT CALLS ITSELF “GIRL, YOU’RE ALREADY BEAUTIFUL AND GOOD IN MATH AND SCIENCE SO HERE’S A FUN WAY TO PRACTICE RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS WITH YOUR FRIENDS”? THIS IS ALL WRONG! NEEDS MORE ZIP! SHORTEN IT! AND PUT IT IN PINK! But maybe not. Maybe the whole thing was more calculated than that.

Because all I can see here is exactly what it looks like. A really depressing box of fitness tools that young girls all over asked for and opened up on their 8th birthdays. And then subconsciously were like, OHMYGOSHAMIFAT? I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT THAT MUCH BECAUSE I WAS TOO BUSY USING MY RUBBING CRAYON ON MY FASHION PLATES AND READING SUMMER OF THE SWANS AND THE LATEST RANGER RICK AND I DIDN’T KNOW I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DOING EXTRA EXERCISES BEYOND RECESS AND P.E. AND RIDING MY BIKE FOR 3 HOURS AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND PRETENDING TO BE A HORSE AND RUNNING IN MY NEIGHBOR’S BACKYARD! And then a new consumer group was born.

"To be frank, childbirth gives a woman a giant set of balls. The high you get as you realize it’s all over, and that you didn’t actually die, can last the rest of your life. Off their faces with euphoria and bucked by how brave they are, new mothers finally tell the in-laws to back off, dye their hair red, get driving lessons, become self-employed, learn to use a drill, experiment with Thai condiments, make cheerful jokes about incontinence, and stop being afraid of the dark.”

- Caitlin Moran (via aneasyworld)

fleurinc:

Sonder

n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

oh, i love this. (new york is a particularly good city for this.)

one of my favorite things to do when people watching is to picture couples at their weddings. i imagine what they looked like, how they glowed watching each each other take their vows, the smiles plastered to their faces all day. perhaps this is a very specific kind of sonder.

To sum it all up quickly bc I need to be folding laundry and doing dishes right now…
1. Having a 2 year old is hard work. But I still think newborns are 100x harder.
2. We moved to Baltimore. I miss Boston. So badly.
3. I miss my deep, true, forever friends in Nashville. I miss Nashville’s houses, music, food, shopping, and its fabulous style. I don’t miss the feeling of trying to keep up, though.
4. Instagram is fun. Pinterest is still fun. Facebook is getting gross.
5. Tv comedies are so great right now: New Girl, Girls, Happy Endings, office. I never miss the Office! And where is Zach Braff these days?
6. I need new furniture. And play room, so my house doesn’t look like a daycare center.
7. I am going to be a bridesmaid in the most romantic wedding ever. So excited!
8. I am still nursing. Don’t know how that will ever end.
9. Why can’t nap time last a little bit longer?

npr:

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in..."

“
Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.
”

- © Max Ehrmann 1927

npr:

that back seat is pretty crazy!

gotagirlcrush:

Got a Girl Crush On: Emily Finch, mother of 6 with no car and 1 incredible bike

Call her crazy. Call her a Portland stereotype—although she claims she doesn’t do it to save the world—“I cancel out my bike riding every day with all the other terrible things I do,” she admits. “I don’t compost, I stink at vegetable gardening”.

But, Emily (34) traded in her SUV for a bakfiets (a traditional Dutch cargo tricycle) to haul her brood of six (ages 2 to 11).

In three years, Emily estimates she’s spent about $135 dollars maintaining her bike.

It also saves her money on exercise equipment or a gym membership. She’s lost 25 pounds since she got the bike in 2009 and says she never thought she’d get back to her pre-birth weight after having six kids. When I asked her why she doesn’t get an electric-assist system, she replied with a big smile, “Because I like chocolate!”

Talk about a POWER-FREAKIN-HOUSE!

Moms are incredible!

Yes! And they are all wearing their helmets.
—Daisy

That’s awesome.

boston:
